Healthy Household Tips

We all have a desire to eat and live healthier lives but sometimes it just seems too overwhelming and time consuming to tackle it all. So... I will be posting periodic tips on eating and living healthier lives. Sometimes it might be a recipe, or a household cleaner - you never know what you might find here so check back often! :-)

One little thing I do to save time is write the recipe for my homemade cleaners with a Sharpy marker on the outside of the container that I keep them in so I don't have to pull out the recipe each time I need to make it.

Healthy tip #1: Multi-purpose Cleaner

Save the environment as well as money by making your own multi-purpose cleaner. It is quick and easy and does a great job. Use it just as you would your old stuff. This costs pennies to make and is MUCH safer for the environment.

Purchase a spray bottle or use the empty one from your last bottle of store bought cleaner.

Add the following ingredients to the bottle and shake well:

1 tsp borax (in the laundry detergent isle of the store)
1/2 Tsp washing soda (it is by Arm and Hammer and is in a box just like baking soda but is in the cleaning isle of the store)
2 Tbs lemon juice
1 cup hot water

Healthy tip #2: Homemade Fabric Softener

You may not be aware that in addition to being very expensive, most of the fabric softener and dryer sheets you buy in the store contain cancer causing ingredients. They are also horrible for your clothes as well as the environment. Here is a very easy and inexpensive homemade fabric softener that works great.

In a one gallon jug (an old vinegar jug works great) mix together...

6 cups of water
3 cups of vinegar
2 cups of hair conditioner (any kind you like but it's best to use an all natural conditioner to keep it as healthy and environmentally friendly as possible).
Shake it up and use about 1/3 cup per load in the rinse cycle (adjust the amount if needed).

Don't forget to write the recipe on the container to save you time the next time you make it!

Turkeys in school

These were the turkeys we made in school last week. The craft not the children!!! :-)

My Dramma Queen!

The child knows how to pose! :-)

Cagel's Dairy Farm

Here are pictures of our field trip with our home school group to Cagel's Dairy farm. The dog in the picture of the man and the dog in the truck was amazing to watch! That little dog herded all the cows and made them come right up to the hay ride were were watching from. In the picture of me in the pink hat - the children are putting their fingers in the thing that milks the cow to see what it feels like. They all thought that was very funny!

Big Mean Mountain...

This is the giant leave pile that I made for the children. We have a book about a little cloud that encounters a "big mean mountain". Nathan calls all of our leave piles "Big Mean Mountain" and he attacks!

Mommy and Robbie

We had a mother/son camping trip with our home school group and Robbie and I had an absolute blast!! Here are the pictures from that. The boy that is with Robbie and most of the pictures is Ken. We met Ken on this trip and those boys became wonderful friends that weekend. Although, Robbie called him "Mike" the whole weekend and Ken kept calling Robbie "Ronnie". Even today, when Robbie refers to him - he often said "My friend from camping - his name isn't Mike - KEN!" :-)

Park Day with the home school group

These are from one of our home school park days. We have met so many wonderful friends!!

Zzzzzzzz.....

I couldn't resist! Robbie fell asleep mid sentence! He is laying in the doorway that leads from our kitchen into our garage. I guess he was a bit tired ya think?!

Home School Hoe Down

What a great time we had at the Home School Hoe Down! We dressed in our best "hoe down" atire and head out to the farm! Abbey square danced with Mommy, the children all got their faces painted, there were tons of games, a hay ride, and just a ton of fun!

Sleeping Angels

What more can I say?!

Stone Mountain Home School Day

We had a BLAST at the Stone Mountain home school day a few weeks ago. Daddy took the day off and went with us and we all really enjoyed ourselves! Among the highlights of the day was when Abbey got picked to go up on stage during the Science Guy show! It was hysterical! We also got to go on a mini adventure course and play in a huge pool of bubbles! The day was an all around great time.
