Healthy Household Tips

We all have a desire to eat and live healthier lives but sometimes it just seems too overwhelming and time consuming to tackle it all. So... I will be posting periodic tips on eating and living healthier lives. Sometimes it might be a recipe, or a household cleaner - you never know what you might find here so check back often! :-)

One little thing I do to save time is write the recipe for my homemade cleaners with a Sharpy marker on the outside of the container that I keep them in so I don't have to pull out the recipe each time I need to make it.

Healthy tip #1: Multi-purpose Cleaner

Save the environment as well as money by making your own multi-purpose cleaner. It is quick and easy and does a great job. Use it just as you would your old stuff. This costs pennies to make and is MUCH safer for the environment.

Purchase a spray bottle or use the empty one from your last bottle of store bought cleaner.

Add the following ingredients to the bottle and shake well:

1 tsp borax (in the laundry detergent isle of the store)
1/2 Tsp washing soda (it is by Arm and Hammer and is in a box just like baking soda but is in the cleaning isle of the store)
2 Tbs lemon juice
1 cup hot water

Healthy tip #2: Homemade Fabric Softener

You may not be aware that in addition to being very expensive, most of the fabric softener and dryer sheets you buy in the store contain cancer causing ingredients. They are also horrible for your clothes as well as the environment. Here is a very easy and inexpensive homemade fabric softener that works great.

In a one gallon jug (an old vinegar jug works great) mix together...

6 cups of water
3 cups of vinegar
2 cups of hair conditioner (any kind you like but it's best to use an all natural conditioner to keep it as healthy and environmentally friendly as possible).
Shake it up and use about 1/3 cup per load in the rinse cycle (adjust the amount if needed).

Don't forget to write the recipe on the container to save you time the next time you make it!

Night Night!

Nathan has decided that he isn't going to wait for Mommy to put him down for his nap. Lately, if he gets tired while Robbie and Abbey are in school, he goes up to his room, gets a book and reads himself to sleep! What a little sweety!

Robbie and Abbey are doing great in school. I'm so proud of them both. Robbie is much more focused than he was last year and really seems to enjoy school. He tells me all the time that he always wants to have school at home "even when he is big"! Abbey is starting to read! She is not even 4 1/2 years old and she is really starting to read. She can read all of the "at" words (like bat, cat, mat, etc) and all of the "an" words (like pan, man, Dan, etc). I can't believe how quickly she is picking it up. She was able to sound out every "an" word without me telling her what even one of them said! Robbie is getting excited about reading too. He asked me yesterday if I was going to start teaching him the stuff Abbey is doing after he learns his letters better. I can't wait to be able to start with him. He is working hard at learning his letters so he will be right behind her in no time at all.
