Healthy Household Tips

We all have a desire to eat and live healthier lives but sometimes it just seems too overwhelming and time consuming to tackle it all. So... I will be posting periodic tips on eating and living healthier lives. Sometimes it might be a recipe, or a household cleaner - you never know what you might find here so check back often! :-)

One little thing I do to save time is write the recipe for my homemade cleaners with a Sharpy marker on the outside of the container that I keep them in so I don't have to pull out the recipe each time I need to make it.

Healthy tip #1: Multi-purpose Cleaner

Save the environment as well as money by making your own multi-purpose cleaner. It is quick and easy and does a great job. Use it just as you would your old stuff. This costs pennies to make and is MUCH safer for the environment.

Purchase a spray bottle or use the empty one from your last bottle of store bought cleaner.

Add the following ingredients to the bottle and shake well:

1 tsp borax (in the laundry detergent isle of the store)
1/2 Tsp washing soda (it is by Arm and Hammer and is in a box just like baking soda but is in the cleaning isle of the store)
2 Tbs lemon juice
1 cup hot water

Healthy tip #2: Homemade Fabric Softener

You may not be aware that in addition to being very expensive, most of the fabric softener and dryer sheets you buy in the store contain cancer causing ingredients. They are also horrible for your clothes as well as the environment. Here is a very easy and inexpensive homemade fabric softener that works great.

In a one gallon jug (an old vinegar jug works great) mix together...

6 cups of water
3 cups of vinegar
2 cups of hair conditioner (any kind you like but it's best to use an all natural conditioner to keep it as healthy and environmentally friendly as possible).
Shake it up and use about 1/3 cup per load in the rinse cycle (adjust the amount if needed).

Don't forget to write the recipe on the container to save you time the next time you make it!

Tubing

Right after our Soccer game on Saturday, we jumped in the van and drove to Helen, GA to go tubing down the Chattahoochee River with the home school group. What a blast we had! Nathan even went in his own tube the entire way!!!!! He is still talking about it. He makes the most incredible expressions with his face and tells me all about what we did. "Mama, water!" He takes his hands and moves them like he was going down the river in the tube and keeps saying "water". He always has so much expression when he tells stories. I could listen to him all day. :-) One of the big highlights of the day was when Daddy fell out of his tube face first in the water. Oh how I wish I could have gotten that on camera. All we saw were feet sticking up! :-) Here are a couple of pictures from that day. I don't have any of us in the tubes because I couldn't take my camera in the water but here are some before and after the tubing while we were still at the river.
