Healthy Household Tips

We all have a desire to eat and live healthier lives but sometimes it just seems too overwhelming and time consuming to tackle it all. So... I will be posting periodic tips on eating and living healthier lives. Sometimes it might be a recipe, or a household cleaner - you never know what you might find here so check back often! :-)

One little thing I do to save time is write the recipe for my homemade cleaners with a Sharpy marker on the outside of the container that I keep them in so I don't have to pull out the recipe each time I need to make it.

Healthy tip #1: Multi-purpose Cleaner

Save the environment as well as money by making your own multi-purpose cleaner. It is quick and easy and does a great job. Use it just as you would your old stuff. This costs pennies to make and is MUCH safer for the environment.

Purchase a spray bottle or use the empty one from your last bottle of store bought cleaner.

Add the following ingredients to the bottle and shake well:

1 tsp borax (in the laundry detergent isle of the store)
1/2 Tsp washing soda (it is by Arm and Hammer and is in a box just like baking soda but is in the cleaning isle of the store)
2 Tbs lemon juice
1 cup hot water

Healthy tip #2: Homemade Fabric Softener

You may not be aware that in addition to being very expensive, most of the fabric softener and dryer sheets you buy in the store contain cancer causing ingredients. They are also horrible for your clothes as well as the environment. Here is a very easy and inexpensive homemade fabric softener that works great.

In a one gallon jug (an old vinegar jug works great) mix together...

6 cups of water
3 cups of vinegar
2 cups of hair conditioner (any kind you like but it's best to use an all natural conditioner to keep it as healthy and environmentally friendly as possible).
Shake it up and use about 1/3 cup per load in the rinse cycle (adjust the amount if needed).

Don't forget to write the recipe on the container to save you time the next time you make it!

Sawnee Mtn. Scavenger Hunt

What a fun day! We had our first outing with the homeschool group at Sawnee Mountain Preserve for a scavenger hunt. We got lost on the way there, so by the time we got there everyone had already started up the mountain. I was pretty disappointed but I said, "Ok, we are going to go up anyway and hopefully we will find some people from the group along the way". Now mind you, we had never met any of these people before so I was truely on my own "scavenger hunt". :-)

Anyway, the children were wonderful and we found 32 items on our list! Some of the things we found were a Y-shaped twig, fern, moss, tree with a hole in it, berries and lots of other stuff! We did end up finding some of the others while we were there and made some new friends. We all really enjoyed ourselves and I can't wait to go back and do it again.
