Healthy Household Tips

We all have a desire to eat and live healthier lives but sometimes it just seems too overwhelming and time consuming to tackle it all. So... I will be posting periodic tips on eating and living healthier lives. Sometimes it might be a recipe, or a household cleaner - you never know what you might find here so check back often! :-)

One little thing I do to save time is write the recipe for my homemade cleaners with a Sharpy marker on the outside of the container that I keep them in so I don't have to pull out the recipe each time I need to make it.

Healthy tip #1: Multi-purpose Cleaner

Save the environment as well as money by making your own multi-purpose cleaner. It is quick and easy and does a great job. Use it just as you would your old stuff. This costs pennies to make and is MUCH safer for the environment.

Purchase a spray bottle or use the empty one from your last bottle of store bought cleaner.

Add the following ingredients to the bottle and shake well:

1 tsp borax (in the laundry detergent isle of the store)
1/2 Tsp washing soda (it is by Arm and Hammer and is in a box just like baking soda but is in the cleaning isle of the store)
2 Tbs lemon juice
1 cup hot water

Healthy tip #2: Homemade Fabric Softener

You may not be aware that in addition to being very expensive, most of the fabric softener and dryer sheets you buy in the store contain cancer causing ingredients. They are also horrible for your clothes as well as the environment. Here is a very easy and inexpensive homemade fabric softener that works great.

In a one gallon jug (an old vinegar jug works great) mix together...

6 cups of water
3 cups of vinegar
2 cups of hair conditioner (any kind you like but it's best to use an all natural conditioner to keep it as healthy and environmentally friendly as possible).
Shake it up and use about 1/3 cup per load in the rinse cycle (adjust the amount if needed).

Don't forget to write the recipe on the container to save you time the next time you make it!

Robbie and Abbey's first soccer game!

Robbie and Abbey had their first soccer game on Saturday! It was SOOOO cute! I laughed for an entire hour. They both scored goals (ok, Abbey's goal was for the other team but hey, it was a goal!). When Abbey scored her goal (for the other team) she came running across the field with her arms stretched open wide, jumped into my arms and just as excited as I've ever seen her she yelled, "Mommy! I scored a goal for you!!". My heart just melted right then and there. I couldn't have been any prouder. Nathan was the official water boy. Every time they had a water break, Nathan (all on his own with no prompting from me) would get the water bottles and say "Bubba, Sissy, Drink!". I think he enjoyed himself as much as anyone there. Daddy was in his glory because I think the coach has officially made him the Assistant Coach. He is so good with all the children and has jumped right in with both feet. The kids love having Daddy as their "coach" too. Look closely at the 2nd picture (the one where Robbie is kicking the ball). His shin guard is on completely backwards and is almost ready to fall off and Abbey's shorts are just about to her ankles. :-)
